You often
hear someone say that they are conservative on some issues and liberal on other
issues. This is usually not true. What
they really mean is that they agree with the Democratic Party on some issues
and with the Republican Party on other issues. You might be asking, “What’s the difference?”. People typically just think that the
Republican Party is conservative and the Democratic Party is liberal. Well, the truth is that neither party is
really liberal or conservative. In fact,
you can go through all of the major political issues and see that it is almost
an even split. Let’s look at some of
these issues and you can see exactly what I’m talking about.
There are
some obvious ones that we all know already.
For instance, if you are opposed to gun control then you have a
conservative stance. Now, if you are in
favor of gay marriage then you also have a conservative stance. Confused? Let’s
try another. Do you think that people should be allowed to sit in their own
house and smoke marijuana and not bother anybody, just minding their own
business? If you do then you have a conservative stance. Are you getting it? Being conservative or liberal doesn’t have
anything to do with a party affiliation.
It refers to how much you think the government should control. Now taking this into consideration, isn’t it
easy to see why congress can’t ever agree on anything and get anything done?
The fact of the matter is that most of our country is simply split into two
parties that only want to disagree with each other.
The most
important reason why we need to understand this is so that we can agree on a
political issue that is more crucial than any of these individual topics, the fundamental
policy of our government. The one
universal desire among Americans is to be able to do what we want. We all want the government to stop regulating
our lives. We don’t want to be told what to do and how to do it. I know this sounds too radical to achieve,
but the truth is we can have this kind of freedom. The constitution was written so that we can
have this freedom. People have come to the United States from all over the
world to have this freedom. All we need
to do is remember that our government only has as much power as we allow it to
have.
